The Deep Blue Struggle
Splash! The coolness of
the water hits me and runs up my spine.
I wait for others so I can go down.
It's time
I'm sinking.
The peaceful water rushes over my head as I go down
I feel cooled and relaxed, I'm weightless down here
I'm carefree
I start the long leg strokes that propel me forward each time
each time becoming harder than the last
over time my breathing becomes faster
I struggle to keep my legs moving and start to feel heavy
we are getting close to the boat
I start to slow, I can't keep swimming with the same speed as everyone else
They are all so much bigger and more experienced, they have been in this situation so many times
I just can't keep up.
We're there
we start our way back up
we're up. Finally
I inflate the vest and let the current bring me into the boat, the instructor helps me into the boat, I drop the gear onto the seat
first dive down

  2. Alex, I really enjoyed your poem. This is a powerful metaphor for struggle. I see that you used several other poetic techniques well here - remember to say which ones.
